Creating a Dementia-Friendly 4th of July Celebration

While the fireworks may be fun and beautiful, they can be distressing for dementia-afflicted seniors. Consider these 4 adjustments to create a dementia-friendly 4th of July.

Ditch the Fireworks:

The loud noises can be distressing, especially if your loved one is a war veteran, in which case the sounds can be misinterpreted and triggering. Consider watching Fireworks on the TV instead.

Be Prepared:

Communicate with your loved one about the fireworks ahead of time. Play soothing background music or familiar favorite songs to help them relax during the explosions.

Celebrate Creatively:

Bake themed desserts, watch movies that feature Independence Day, enjoy the outdoors before the fireworks begin.

Keep Gatherings Small:

Stick with close family and friends for holiday celebrations! Avoid large crowds or over stimulating activities.
